The Ballet Girl by Aden Foyer

hola mis amores;

Hope your week has been good and has treated you well. For today, I want to talk about this song I found a while back and it was love at first listen.

It's normally not something I'd listen to because the song, The Ballet Girl by Aden Foyer falls in the Alternative/Indie genre but I think it was in one of my discover playlists and I wish I could go back and listen to this song again for the first time.

I've been gatekeeping this song until now and haven't really shared it with any of my friends because it makes me feel like I have a sweet secret but today I'm going to well talk about it.

The Ballet Girl is written, produced and performed by Aden Foyer. There's an additional writer involved, Paul Hers.

If I was to use one word to sum this song up, it would be phenomenal.

After the first listen, I wanted to listen to other songs by the artist but turns out this is the first song he has put out.

After a little more digging and research I found out that Aden Foyer, used a stage name 'Jonas Aden' and is a very well known DJ and music producer. After reading this I was shocked.

This song is anything but electronic music and I was in awe of the sheer talent of the artist.

Aden Foyer, in the YouTube video of the song, tells us how he actually disappeared for a two years or so because the music he was making back then didn't make him happy. He actually relocated to a cabin the woods to get more clarity and wrote this song. He did say, that he was finally happy with the music he was making.

I really insist that you guys watch the YouTube video, I'll link it below.

The lyrics are very well thought out and tells us a story about a girl who ran away from home and is a ballet dancer.

The first verse starts with the story where the ballet girl is working at a bar but she's very young and isn't even old enough to have a drink. She does the job because her mother is an addict and can't pay for her own needs. To escape this, she runs away from home and has nothing other than ballet as a talent, a dance that her runaway father taught her.

The pre-chorus paints an opera like picture where the girl is dancing all alone and as a result of dancing too much, her toes are bleeding.

The favorite part of the song for me is the chorus. The electric guitars and drums come in the chorus and describes the the beauty of the ballet girl. There's a tiny electric guitar interlude between the second last and last line of the chorus which fits the vibes very well.

The music that comes in between the chorus and the next verse makes it sound exactly as if I'm watching a ballet dance.

The next worse talks about how she as a young woman is desired by every man in town and they send her bouquets of roses and that fills the opera. Yet her only true and safe space is after the curtain falls, in the applause. The drums here are constant and the electric guitar disappears.

After this, the pre-chorus and chorus follow. The drums make an exit in the pre-chorus only to come back in the chorus along with the electric guitar.

The pre-chorus repeats again but this time it's quieter with only the piano in the background which actually builds the feeling of anticipation for the chorus.

And it does return back in the chorus and there is a violin interlude which finished the song off on a royal note. After a little digging, I found out that the violin is from France and was handmade in 1884.

I think more than the musical arrangement for me, it was the vocals that grabbed my attention. There's a weird laid back feeling I get from the vocals and the lyrics are just absolutely marvelous. Also the interesting word choices used, made me focus on the song and abandon the task on hand.
