This time on music analysis, I'm going to analyse or rather talk about(because analysis makes me seem professional which I'm not :p) the Clouds EP by wslyy. I was excited for this release as wslyy is a small scale artist as of now, but I believe in a few years he's going be a big shot!
It's always really refreshing to have new artists in the lo-fi hip-hop genre. For me lo-fi music is a great way to unwind after a stressful day or even when I get bored of my normal playlists.
I wasn't aware of wslyy's music until a fortnight ago. He actually reached out to me on Instagram and I was well a bit shook. He's a really genuine person and loves to get feedback about his music. I listened to his songs and my first thought was "damn, these are really good!" He further told me that soon his EP would be out.
His first EP Clouds came out on 7 January 2022. Great start to new year, if you ask me. This EP encompasses 5 songs. The Intro and the Interlude are purely music pieces and prepare you for the transition between the songs. In this EP, he has collaborated with artists like Explicit Official and Josh Taylor. The EP is doing really well and has amassed 3000+ streams in seven days on Spotify.
If asked, my personal favorite has to be Dreams. The lyrics accurately describe how reality feels like dreams. There are those moments where you think to yourself, "I'm not dreaming now, am I?" Especially times where you're in love, you feel like everything is a dream come true.
Wslyy's music and beat patterns synchronise beautifully. This makes the lo-fi vibe really come through. His voice is raw, deep, rich and distinct. You cannot mistake his voice for anyone else. The collaborative songs, which are, Behind Bars and California Dream add a slight punk vibe. Coming from the artist himself, he says Behind Bars has a drill music vibe.
So I got in touch with wslyy and asked him a few questions!
1. When did you start making music? I started only 2 years ago as I got a career ending injury in football but I also used to dance and that’s where I found the love for music. 2. What was the biggest inspiration behind your CLOUDS EP? I always wanted to have an EP filled with different emotions and since it’s called CLOUDS because with clouds you can refer it to the weather e.g. rain being sad, sun being happy etc… so that’s how it all really came about. 3. If you were a bit biased, what would you say is your favorite song from the EP? Definitely Clouds! I don’t know what it is but every time I listen back to it I just love the song a lot, although I do sometimes say to myself “that vocal take should’ve been higher” or “maybe if I added more effects to the vocal it would sound more pleasing” but it’s what I love about music hearing your own feedback as well others.
4. Biggest music inspirations growing up or even now? You will be shocked; but I grew up listening to Bob Marley and that sort of genre, but it wasn’t until 2014, when I started listening to rap such as Eminem and Tupac. But I think my biggest inspirations are X, Juice and Russ for sure, and even now the likes of Witt Lowry and Ollie. 5. Anything you want to say to your fans? I wanna say a massive thank you to everyone supporting me so far on this journey! This is just the start, new music coming this year! (HINT) - Album might be coming in the summer. Another thing I would like to say is to be yourself in this world, never search for love let love come to you and also let me know your feedback and advice from listening to my music I always like to hear other peoples feedback! Wslyy is such a genuine and nice person to talk to. He has a really good personality and cares a lot about music and his fans. About the Artist
wslyy also known as wes is an independent artist and grew up in Sicily, Italy but also is from Brighton, UK and is known for his Lo-fi Hip-hop vocals. He found the love for music back in 2013 when he started to try and write songs or perform covers in a band, He then went to restart his career in making music back in 2019 where he wrote a few songs and decided to find the love back for music and recording.
His first ever song ‘Message’ that was released on the 16.04.21. The song has now accumulated near to 1000 streams since it’s release, a huge milestone for wes and it marked the start of his music career.
Wes also hopes that you feel a connection to his music when listening and that he is very happy to hear your feedback on his music to help him improve or say how you like the song(s).
